The good news from the Tuesday night win by the Boston Red Sox was that young hotshot Jacoby Ellsbury had his first walk-off hit. On Wednesday night, he hit a home run in the bottom of the ninth. He single-handedly beat the Cleveland Indians.
The bad news was the first celebration. As he crossed home plate, his teammates beat him to a pulp.
Emotion is hard to control when victory is sweet, but the teammates of Jacoby Ellsbury are either stupid or have selective amnesia.
Last season a teammate in his exuberance ran into Jacoby and broke four ribs. He was out for the entire season, partly due to the ineptitude of the medical staff, and partly due to the over-wrought play of Adrian Beltre, now departed.
When Ellsbury crossed home plate in the ninth, he was descended upon by happy teammates. We have no quarrel with that. It was a great victory.
