In 1967, the Red Sox adopted a song from Man of La Mancha, and everyone sang “The Impossible Dream.”
This year, the Red Sox fans are torn as to their new theme song.
Red Sox fans don’t know whether we should sing “The September Song” or “Send in the Clowns.”
Perhaps fans already know which one is more appropriate. Every other game we find ourselves humming the tunes apropos, like we did during the Golden Age of Losing at Fenway.
Oh, it’s a long, long way from April to October, but the days grow short when you reach September.
When the autumn weather turns the leaves to flames, the Red Sox go down in game after game. One hasn’t got time for the waiting game and lucky winning streaks.
Oh, the games dwindle down to a precious few: September, soon we’ll be in November, entirely skipping October.
And these precious few days, the Red Sox will lose for you. They will lose for you in myriad ways.
