Few in Boston recall the old Boston Braves who played over in an area now populated by Boston University. Not much remains of old Braves Field. Even fewer may remember the one link between the teams that lived on after the Braves left Boston for Milwaukee.

It was something called the Jimmy Fund.

It was a charity for children who came to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, at the time truly a unique haven. The Jimmy Fund was the Boston Braves' project after World War II.  It started in 1948 with Braves players making radio appeals to the public for donations.

Ted Williams was also associated with the Jimmy Fund in the late 1940s. He was the foremost athlete of his time, perhaps the only one, who put a charity at the top of his priorities. But the actual baseball mind that started it was the owner of the Braves, Lou Perini, a Boston businessman.
