American Chris Solinsky, making his debut at 10.000m, broke the nine-year-old USA national record on Saturday, finishing in 26 minutes 59,60 seconds at the Payton Jordan Invitational held at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California.
Solinsky, 11th in the 5.000m at the 2009 IAAF World Championships, made his first ...race at the 25-lap distance a memorable one, blasting past American Galen Rupp in the final 800m—covered in 1.56,4—to demolish Meb Keflezighi's previous mark of 27.13,98—a mark which was set at the 2001 edition of this very meet.
Kenyan Daniel Salel, who also made his debut at this distance, finished second in 27.07,85, followed by countryman Sam Chelenga in third. Chelenga, who set the USA university record last year at the University of California, took more than 20 seconds off of his previous best in establishing a new university standard.
Rupp, who was heavily favoured entering the contest, settled for fourth and a new personal best of 27.10,74—a time which also broke Keflezighi's former record.
